Perreo as Queer Feminist Resistance: A Creative Conversation

This panel will explore how Perreo Combativo aims to empower Black and Latinx Queer people to enact transformative social change in their communities and beyond.

Perreo is an Afro-diasporic dance that has represented LGBTQ+ as well as Latinx resistance, empowerment, and socio-political activist movements. In August 2019, community members and activists gathered in solidarity to protest for the resignation of Ricardo Rosselló, Puerto Rico’s then-governor. What emerged was a movement called Perreo Combativo, which sought to create an inclusive and dynamic environment where all bodies could come together and resist through dance and solidarity. Perreo Combativo quickly garnered media attention and a transnational movement erupted throughout Puerto Rico and the United States. Please click this link for a copy of the event flyer.
