Edna Saffy Lecture Series: Dr. Safiya Noble Presents on Algorithmic Oppression

As part of the Edna Saffy Lecture Series, the Center co-sponsored Dr. Safiya Noble’s lecture, “Your Search Algorithm is Political.” This talk was organized by the African American Studies Program and cosponsored by multiple units on campus. Dr. Noble is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the Department of Information Studies where she serves as the Co-Director of the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry. She is the author of a best-selling book Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism (NYU Press). In her talk, Dr. Noble discussed artificial intelligence as a human rights issue in the 21st century. She provided evidence on how search algorithms can misrepresent people and communities, and the harm that comes from these algorithmic practices, designed and implemented by humans. She underscored the role of search engines and other decision-making systems in contributing to oppression. She argued that with artificial intelligence must come accountability.
