Edna Saffy Lecture Series Co-sponsors Dr. Safiya Noble Event

In collaboration with the African American Studies Program and other cosponsors, the Center for Gender, Sexualities, and Women’s Studies Research Edna Saffy Lecture for fall 2020 was leading scholar, Dr. Safya Noble, Assistant Professor in the Annenberg School of Communication at USC. In her lecture titled, “Your Search Algorithm is Political,” Dr. Noble, provided evidence on how search algorithms, like Google search, misrepresent people and communities, and the harm that comes from these algorithmic practices. She described how search engines and similar decisionmaking systems contribute to oppression and racist marginalization and underscored that with artificial intelligence must come accountability.
