Women leading change: Human Rights and Environmental Justice in Latin America

April 24, 2019 @ 2:30 pm - 6:00 pm

This public forum centers on the experiences of Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and Mestiza women leaders from Colombia, Ecuador, and Paraguay. Representatives from the Kichwa Indigenous community Sarayaku, the Comite del Paro Civico de Buenaventura, the Yakye Axa Indigenous community, and a leading Paraguayan human rights lawyer will discuss their experiences mobilizing civil society resistance to strengthen Afro-descendant rights, using the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to defend Indigenous territories, and advancing the rights of nature to foster socio-environmental justice.  While each of these efforts is intimately tied to place, the struggles are reshaping notions of justice and rights across the Americas. An open discussion will follow presentations given by each of the invited speakers. Please see the Center for Latin American Studies calendar to register (free).  Reception to follow for registered attendees.

This event is generously sponsored by the UF Center for Latin American Studies, the UF International Center, the Tropical Conservation and Development Program, the UF Center for Gender, Sexualities, and Women’s Studies Research, the University of Arizona Center for Latin American Studies, and the U.S. Department of Education Title VI program.
