Around 1600, French royal residences displayed imagery that surprisingly suggested an authoritative political place for the spouse of King Henri IV. The château of Fontainebleau espe-cially contained artful vocabulary that wittily, yet seriously, illuminated the paradoxical position that a queen occupied in Baroque France.
